Jake Fieler National Signing 12/19/13
Last night I had the honor of attending Jake Fielers' National Letter of Intent Signing Ceremony. It was a great moment and a joy to see someone who has worked so hard finally achieve their goals. Congratulations to him and his family. They dont just give out Division 1 Football scholarships. They are earned on the field and in the weight room through blood, sweat, tears, and sacrifice.
When Jake came to me I knew he had talents that physically others simply don't have. No amount of squatting will ever make you 6'7''. Jake wasn't satisfied however to simply coast on these gifts. He desired more and asked for it. We knew he needed to lose weight and become more athletic. He was a slow and chubby 315 and coming off a foot injury that seriously hurt his recruiting chances. He religiously followed the diet plan we gave him and seemingly overnight his body began to change. He dropped weight relentlessly until he weighed 275. 40lbs lost!!! All while setting numerous strength and speed PRs. His speed got so much better in fact, that everyone began calling him "Usain" Fieler and Usain Bolt the world 100m and 200m record holder.
He decided to try an earn a scholarship to a major D1 program by earning it on the field in a place where he would get noticed, Fork Union Military Academy (FUMA). FUMA is a prep school that 5th year Sr. athletes attend to improve their status in the eyes of scouts. When it came time for Jake to leave for FUMA this summer he was ready. He was lighter, stronger and faster than he'd ever been. His highlight tape showed it. Pancake after pancake block and a motor that wouldn't quit drew interest from scouts all over.
In the end Jake chose between several offers, including Cincinnati and Southern Miss but Virginia felt like home he said. We're incredibly happy for him and couldn't be more proud here at Piercing CrossFit. We also welcome him back over winter break to prepare to enroll early in the spring semester and spring football.
His entire family are first class people and understand the work hes put in. Let this be a lesson to young athletes looking to take that next step. It takes everything you've got and more.
